Quinta das Lágrimas

A Quinta das Lágrimas, cuja origem se perde nos séculos, foi o cenário dos amores proibidos do príncipe D. Pedro e D.Inês de Castro, uma fidalga castelhana que servia de dama de companhia a sua mulher D. Constança. Diz a lenda que foi na Quinta das Lágrimas que D. Inês chorou pela última vez, enquanto era trespassada pelos punhais dos fidalgos a quem o rei Afonso IV ordenara a sua morte. As lágrimas então derramadas inspiraram Luís de Camões a criar o nome de Fonte das Lágrimas e muitos outros escritores a consagrar o amor eterno de Pedro e Inês.

O Palácio foi construído no século XVIII mas, devido a um incêndio, a casa apresenta arquitectura do século XIX.

Ao longo do tempo várias ilustres personalidades foram passando por este local. Uma das mais conhecidas foi Arthur Wellesley, duque de Wellington,comandante das tropas que atacaram as forças invasoras de Napoleão, que plantou duas sequóias, hoje com 190 anos.

O Jardim foi idealizado no século XIX, seguindo uma tendência da época, a da constituição de uma espécie de Museu Vegetal, onde estariam representadas espécies de todo o mundo. A sua flora forma um conjunto de tal maneira rico e diversificado que se equipara em raridade e exotismo aos mais completos jardins botânicos.

Hoje,no Palácio da Quinta das Lágrimas, está instalado um hotel de luxo da cadeia Relais & Châteaux.

A Quinta das Lágrimas é um oásis de paz e tranquilidade no centro de Coimbra.

Quinta das Lágrimas

Quinta das Lágrimas (Estate of Tears) is not just a refined "Hotel de Charme". Besides its confortable rooms, there is a past rich in history and a medieval legend of love. It was here, in the XIV century, that the forbidden love of Prince Pedro and Inês de Castro was dramatically played out.According to the legend, it was in Quinta das Lágrimas that Inês cried for the last time, while being pierced by the daggers of the three noblemen who had been ordered to kill her, by Afonso IV, King of Portugal.

Her blood still stains the stones of the spring which has survived through the centuries in the works of authors such as Camões, Victor Hugo and Ezra Pound, is today livelier than ever in Quinta das Lágrimas.

The palace was built during the 18th century but, owing to a fire, the house has an architecture from 19th century.

Trough years the Quinta was honored with the visit of several famous people. One of this celebrities was Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington and Commander of the British army that helped to counterattack the Napoleonic invasions. He planted two sequoias, which are now approximately 190 years old.

Most the gardens in Lágrimas were designed in 19th century. The garden followed the fashion of that time, with the constitution of a private Vegetal Museum where species from all over the worl would be present. The flora of Quinta das Lágrimas is such a rich diversified collection that it rivals with the greatest Botanical gardens of the country.
